MADE IN AMERICA FEST

The Tavik crew headed out to Made in America Fest to join our friends Cutsnake for their performance onstage, and catch a bit of the madness in DTLA. Taylor Cardinio, a.k.a. 676plustax had his camera in hand and shot everything going on. Check out the pictures below or our recap video.

Thursday Afternoon - Tomorrows Tulips

Thursday Afternoon is TAVIK’s song choice to help get your weekend started early and “beat” the crowds…

Tomorrows Tulips was formed by Alex Knost in 2010 after Japanese Motors, his band prior, dissolved. They are known for their simple instrumentation and straight forward melodies, relentlessly flowing through circular chord progressions, accompanied by Lou Reed/Calvin Johnson esque vocal style and melody. Listen to “Flowers on the Wall” off of their 2013 album Experimental Jelly, and watch for their new record WHEN, out October 7th.

Past and Present

past and present - Allah Las

Past and Present is Tavik’s way of paying homage to the musicians that may have been forgotten, but continue to inspire us today. In each installment we take music from earlier generations and compare it to the songs they influence today.

Music has seen plenty of revivalist groups, and the 60’s are an era frequently revisited. Local band Allah Las are no exception, yet while they look to previous generations, they look to the future as well, breathing new new life into old trends. Listen to Allah Las track “Tell Me (Whats On Your Mind)” off of their 2012 self-titled album, as well as The Seeds “Cant Seem To Make You Mine” off of their 1966 self-titled album.

Hip hop has seen an array of sub genres, one of the most notable being trap. Born in the south, trap can be characterized by its lyrical content, instrumentation, and the iconic rolling hi-hat, only recently finding more commercial success. Listen to Three 6 Mafia’s “Ridin In Da Chevy” (1995), as well trap inspired pop in Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” (2014) with Three 6 Mafia member Juicy J.

Canadian resident Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV, better known by his stage name Mac Demarco, has been self recording music for years, finding more commercial success in 2012 when he signed to Captured Tracks. You always know when you hear a Mac Demarco song, and his live performances are just as unique and entertaining. Listen to “European Vegas” off of his 2012 album Rock and Roll Nightclub, and catch him at FYF this Sunday.
