The Tavik Crew Heads to Coachella

We survived Coachella. We made it through waking up in the back of the car, taking dips in the pool that doubled as showers, and consistently consuming a breakfast of Snickers and Gatorade for three days in a row. And it was glorious.

The highlight of our desert rager, other than the giant astronaut that graced the pages of everybody’s social media? Possibly hearing Arcade Fire frontman, Win Butler confirm what we felt about the overhyped VIP area.

“Alright guys, we’re gonna give you every ounce of what we’ve got if you give it back to us,” said Butler. “I just want to say that there’s a lot of fake VIP room bullshit happening at this festival. Sometimes people dream of being there, but it sucks in there so don’t worry about it.”

And we didn’t.

On top of an amazingly unbelievable set by Arcade Fire were the unannounced appearances by a smattering of A-list names: Jay Z, who rapped with his former rival Nas; Beyoncé, who danced (but didn’t sing) with her sister Solange; and Justin Bieber, who presumably turned up to get his picture on Instagram.

There is just too much to report on, to be honest. So you wanna see pics? Well, here they are. Enjoy!

Formed in 1988, The Brian Jonestown Massacre are widely respected as the greatest 60′s revivalist group. From instrumentation to songwriting techniques, the group constantly paid homage to early psychedelic groups. Their name was no exception, referencing The Rolling Stones founding member, Brian Jones. As a Past and Present recommendation, listen to “Feelers” by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and “Sing This All Together” by The Rolling Stones, and be sure to catch The Brian Jonestown Massacre at the Observatory on May 7th.

Day Tripping to Mammoth with PacSun

As we head straight into warm weather in true California fashion, sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the 300-plus annual days of sweet sunshine. Not that we’re complaining, but the Tavik team also likes a little powder play to accompany our “Golden State of Mind”.

Speaking of which, we headed up to Mammoth recently with the PacSun crew for a day of adventure. You know, the usual shits and giggles, beer drinking, out of bounds trekking, and of course some much deserved shreds. We are always in awe that so much winter wonderland can be housed within our sun drenched state.

Take a look.

LA Canvas: The Ultimate Coachella Roundup

Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. As much as you willed it into being, that Coachella ticket never made itself materialize. It’s not like you didn’t pray to the Indio gods for a break–it’s just that, sometimes, jobs don’t take care of themselves, and unfortunately, your credit card company refuses to take cupcakes for payment. But hey, there’s no need to commiserate with your Coachella #FOMO homies. We’ve got a list of desert ragers designed to do your newly toned festival-bod justice. For the ultimate guide on Coachella season parties that won’t require a 3-day scorching heat commitment, scope out our list below.

Where: 401 E Amado Road, Palm Springs [Outside of the Spa Resort Casino]
When: April 16th @ 5pm
What: Fitz and the Tantrums and LA DJ/producer duo CLASSIXX (that’s a lot of capital letters) are gonna be headlining this evening time block party. And guess what? It’s free. This is a rare come-up for Coachella celebrations, so definitely take advantage of it. Just because it’s free don’t mean it ain’t trendy. | RSVP

Where: TBA
When: April 10th & 17th @ 9pm-1am
What: No, there is no yacht. But there will be musical performances by the multi-faceted LA-based crooner Mayer Hawthorne and the lovely ladies of Au Revoir Simone, who headline the two weekends, respectively. The details of the event are wonderfully minimal, but keep up with Filter Magazine’s BLOG to find out how you can be part of the celebration.

When: Saturday 12th, time TBD
Where: Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs | 150 S Indian Canyon Dr, Palm Springs, CA 92262
What: The British brother-duo recently nominated for a Grammy is going to bring. it. down. at the brand spankin’ new Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs. This pair of electronic prodigies are so good that they are playing Coachella two years in a row (yep.) Don’t believe Disclosure will leave you convulsing with audial pleasure? Watch this. | TICKETS

Where: The Ace Hotel Palm Springs | 701 E Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs, CA 92264
When: Sunday 13th & 20th @ 12pm-6pm
What: They say the best cure for a hangover is a beer to level you out, coconut water to rehydrate and a pair of shell-toe sneakers. Join The Do-Over crew and Adidas as they take over the Ace Hotel and do just that. In true Do-Over fashion, the DJ’s are still a mystery. But knowing that last year saw performances by Questlove and Boys Noize, you can only imagine what Do-Over 2014 will have in store. | RSVP

Thursday Afternoon is TAVIK’s song choice to help get your weekend started early and “beat” the crowds…

Made up of producer/artist Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) and The Shins frontman James Mercer, Broken Bells are a unique mix of musical tastes. Blending hip-hop oriented beats with orchestral yet vibey melodies, they created a sound that is new yet familiar. Listen to “The High Road” off of their self-titled album, and be sure to catch them at Coachella this April.

Past and Present is Tavik’s way of paying homage to the musicians that may have been forgotten, but continue to inspire us today. In each installment we take music from earlier generations and compare it to the songs they influence today.

Roxy Music is one of the greats in the world of art rock, and are well known for their abnormal song structures and overall approach. Contemporary artist Youth Lagoon showed a similar approach in his 2013 album Wondrous Bughouse, experimenting with unusual rhythms and sonic landscapes. Listen to the title track off of Roxy Music’s 1973 album For Your Pleasure, and Youth Lagoon’s “Attic Doctor”.

We recently sent our friends over at Mammoth Men some gear for their latest California adventure. BENSON Henley: a camp favorite.

So what is Mammoth Men all about?

In a cold winter month of 2008, a small group of photographers from all over the country grabbed their snowboards to ride the mountains of Mammoth, California. During that week filled with exploration, spontaneity, and storied tales, a bond of mammoth-sized ideas and dreams was forged. These men made a commitment to adventure again and adventure often. What started as a one time getaway has turned into inspiring journeys across the country, including trips along the california coast, the deserts of the southwest, the heavenly powder of utah, the dirty south, and the warm surf of hawaii. Over the years the little wolfpack has traveled by car, by plane, and by tour bus. They’ve made a million memories together, and photographed a million more…

Stay up to date on Mammoth Men’s adventures by checking back to their website often: http://www.mammothmen.com/.
